Can I Be Real With You?

Hi friends! I’ve been super busy lately so I’ve been on here less frequently but I was inspired last week to write about something very very personal. So personal, in fact, that I hardly share it with anyone. Howeverx in light of my experience last week, I feel I must share with you all and I must call out LA Fitness on some unhealthy and potentially triggering sales methods they use during the course of on-boarding as a new member of their gym.

For the last two years I have been a steady 3-4 night per week member at a Planet Fitness that is 40 minutes away from my house. The $20 per month 24-hour, unlimited tanning membership was just too good for this frugal girl to pass up! I spent hours per week at that place and it hold a special place in my heart as the first gym I ever belonged to. Hours preparing for my first half marathon, hours preparing for mudders, hours post break up pounding out every ounce of anger out on those machines and weights. I’m sentimental, ok? However, in light of new goals I’ve made for myself (seeking to become a personal trainer) I felt like I was getting stuck in a rut with workouts there. I lacked the motivation that indimitation brings (I’m weird, I know. But I personally love the challenge that seeing people who are much farther along in their fitness journey brings). I was getting too comfortable with myself there. So, it was time to change to a gym that was closer and on the next step up. LA Fitness seemed like the perfect fit what with the extensive amount of weight and machines in addition to classes, a pool, and sauna. Plus, only a 15 minute drive to the one on Carson Street in SouthSide.

With the membership I was told I get a free personal training session. I was really excited about this because I was ready to hop right back into the saddle and get back to my best self. I set the appointment and showed up ready to sweat only to find that it was a consultation. During this consultation the guy who was “consulting” proceeded to tell me that according to the BMI calculation that I’m extremely obese for my height and that I would need to lose 30 pounds to get to the “national ideal” size. 30 POUNDS?! I have about 22 percent body fat and have a massive amount of muscle weight… plus I’m very “well endowed” both in the front and back. If I lost 30 pounds, I would have little to no breast tissue and would look like skin and bones. I truly couldn’t believe the IGNORANCE and insults that continuously spewed of of this guy’s mouth with him even adding his own comments about my body. THEN on top of that, after tearing me apart, he proceeds to tell me that in order to “fix it” it’ll cost me an extra $100 initiation fee PLUS $200 per month on top of the $100 initiation fee I had just paid to join the gym and the $36/month I pay to remain a member.

I left in such a fluster feeling like I’m enormous and that there’s nothing I can do about it. All I could keep thinking is, “I am so glad this happened to me and not someone who hasn’t dealt with their eating disorder.” If that would have been said to me three years ago binge dieting, 2 a days, and laxatives would have been the first thing I turned to. I was super disappointed at how the consult went but after dealing with my initial hurt, I was able to push past it to see the good in all of it. I HAVE been doing such a good job staying in remission with my eating disorder and eating healthy and working out regularly. WHO CARES WHAT SOME MEATHEAD AT THE GYM THINKS OF MY BODY! He’s getting paid to break me down and then sell me on a service – which by the way is a HORRIBLE business strategy. I wish I could remember the guys name and I would call him out directly but more importantly I want all of you girls to remember this… NO ONE CAN TELL YOU WHAT YOU SHOULD LOOK LIKE EXCEPT FOR YOURSELF. So until next time, imma just keep doing me and saying bye to the haters. ✌🏼️

Formula X Gel-like Nail Polish

This week I received a VoxBox from Influenster that included the FormulaX nail system to test and review online. Can I just tell you, this system is amazing?! It cuts drying time in half and stays on forever! It’s super easy and the Delete All polish remover works with literally ONE swipe. And it’s all gone. I’m really impressed Formula X! You’ll definitely have a returning customer.

Empowerment Collaboration

One of my favorite things about modeling is being able to stand up for causes through collaborations. I recently had the privilege of working with Lola Gilbert of HelloLola Photography (formerly WildeSage Photography) on a body positivity project. If you know anything about me, you know that this is something that is near and dear to my heart.

Lola’s entire premise for her business is to empower women to embrace who they are through photography sessions. Truly, it is one of the BEST things you can do for yourself. Let me just tell you, she’s amazing. From start to finish she makes you feel so comfortable that it’s like having your big behind the lens. She has lots of different options for shoots, product, etc. Check her out on Instagram: @hellololaphotography. She made me feel like such a vintage babe. I can’t say enough about her style 😍.

Today’s Gonna Be Great

Today’s Gonna Be Great

Last week I the opportunity to work with Lucas Hunter (DJ Ljiggy) on a merch/brand project he has been creating. He reached out to me after he saw my Instagram page (@imove92) and asked if I’d be willing to model a dress for his brand, Today’s Gonna Be Great. His goal is to spread positivity among the young generation to combat all the negativity we face in the world. A cause I could totally get behind. Without hesitation I accepted. It was such a privilege to work with both Lucas and the amazing Michael Parente. Below are a few of the results. The hoodie dress can be purchased at http://www.ljiggy.com.

On Brock Turner

It’s been a long time since I have written something from the heart that wasn’t a planned post or photograph. It’s been so long since I’ve been inspired. But in the wake of the ruling on Brock Turner, the rapist from Stanford University, I, as I’m sure many other survivors of sexual crime do, have something to say.

First of all, I am deeply sickened and saddened at the leaniency withwhich the ruling on this case was handled. What you’re telling rapists everywhere is that there is only a small price to pay for drastically altering someone’s life in a horrible way. It has been six years since my assault and while I have sought counseling and have found healing, I still have flashbacks that paralyze me and can sometimes put me in a rut personally and within my current romantic relationship for weeks.

All this talk of Brock Turner has women who have been assaulted and/or raped all over the world in flashbacks of the monstrosities that happened to them. To say that having Brock Turner serve any more time than the meager few months he was sentenced with would drastically alter his life is THE WORST REASON YOU COULD HAVE CHOSEN TO USE! Because quite frankly NO ONE except he and his family care about the outcome of his life ESPECIALLY when you have the life of this poor woman altered forever. She may be able to find healing, she may be able to move on with her life but what Brock Turner did will always remain a part of her story.

The ruling on this case has set America back light years. We have come to a place as a nation where we have transgender bathrooms and tattoos are openly allowed in the work place but we can’t get justice for an unconscious female being forced into sexual acts with a man?! Where is the justice people? Where are the principles our country was founded on? I don’t care who Brock Turner was before he forced himself on this woman, the moment he decided to intoxicate himself and rape someone he gave up his right to the future he was making for himself. It’s something we learn as kids, all actions have consequences and you have the ability to choose how you want to act. He is now a criminal and should be treated as such. He may never do this crime again but the point is that for Jane Doe, it happened and her life will FOREVER be changed.

Even if he was on pace to be an Olymic swimmer, that is an honor and a privelige to get to represent your country on an international level. I pray to God that America at least has enough sense about us that we don’t allow him to get to the point of representing our beautiful country in that way.

We need to take a stand as a country and protest this ridiculousness. Sexual acts without consent is NEVER ok. Intoxication is in fact, and absolute NO NO. Why do we have to even talk about this. I don’t care about how he feels. He doesn’t deserve the pity of Americans like his family seems to think. Sign the petition to impeach the judge whose ruling over the case was way too lenient in order to not affect his swimming career. Don’t let Brock Turner Represent America in the olympics now or ever. He gave up that privilege when he chose to take advantage of an intoxicated woman.

Eat PGH | Bak’n

Yesterday after my shoot, Phoenix surprised me with a day date to our favorite restaurant, Bak’n. Located on Main Street in Carnegie, this restaurant boasts and extensive menu centered around bacon. It’s always nostalgic eating there because it’s where we had our first date! I usually get the Frittata and he usually gets the 1 pound BLT sandwich but this time we switched it up. He got a chicken  sandwich and I got the BLT on a plate with out a bun. So much yum! The bacon is perfectly thick and impeccably cooked to a medium yet crisp consistency. They top it with fresh arugula, thick and juicy beefsteak tomato slices, and a house dressing. I’m not sure what kind of bun it typically comes on but it’s so good without a bun.

The setting is really cool and has a modern industrial vibe with lots of wood and metal mixed for the decor. We have been in there a number of times and it ranges from packed to pretty dead depending on the time of day. Service was very good and quite prompt. Parking is rough since it’s mostly on street parking but the GetGo across the street has quite a few spots and I asked if we could use it to go across the street to eat and they said it was no problem. Besides the nostalgia I have associated with this resturant it really is a hidden gemstone in Carnegie that you all will have to go check out for yourselves some time.
